Mounting Methods

The following is a complete list of mounting methods for our interior signs. Remember, some methods work better on some surfaces than others, so when specifying the type of mounting, please specify the type of surface the sign is to be mounted to. Please also note if the mounting surface is not exactly level or plumb to the finish floor.
Wall Mountings:
CB (Combination) mounting. This method uses both VT and SA methods for mounting on difficult surfaces.

MT (Magnetic Tape) mounting. Applicable to steel mounting surfaces only. Removable.

MF (Mechanically Fastened) mounting. Holes are drilled and countersunk though the backers of the signs based on Customer's specs on size, spacing, location and type of fastener heads. Hardware is not included.

SA (Silicone Adhesive) mounting: Silicone) adhesive is applied to the back of the sign. Applicable to most surfaces.

SC (School) mounting. In high-vandalism areas, the backer is attached via CB mounting (see above) using a low-profile, high-bond non-foam tape. The same tape is used to attach the sign to the backer. This corners are also radiused and the edges the corners and beveling the sign edges to prevent would-be vandals from gaining purchase at the edges. With this method, all fasteners are concealed, and the sign must be destroyed to be removed.

ST (Stud) mounting. Metal studs are either welded to or screwed into drilled and tapped holes in the sign backer. The attached studs are inserted into corresponding holes in the mounting surface and secured with adhesive. Usually only used on cut letters and logos. NOT recommended for most interior applications.

VF (Velcro® Fastened) mounting. A two-part hook-and-loop tape is applied to the back of the sign. One part remains on the sign, the other remains on the mounting surface. Applicable to most surfaces. Removable.

VT (Vinyl Tape) mounting. Double-sided foam tape is applied to the back of the sign for mounting. Applicable to most surfaces.

Panel Mountings (removable):
PM (Pin)
mounting. Pins are attached to the back of the sign for mounting onto cloth partition panels.

PC (Panel Clip) mounting. A single-piece Lexan® panel clip is attached to the top of the sign for hanging on partition panels.

Other Mountings:
GM (Glass) mounting. The PVC (poly-vinyl acetate) sign backer is replaced by a PSV (vinyl) backer of the same dimensions and placed on the glass (or other transparent or translucent) surface. The sign face is then placed on the PSV backer.

Ceiling Mountings (shown below):
FM (Flag) or CM (Ceiling) mounting. One part of a two-part extruded bracket is attached to the sign. The other part is screw-mounted onto the wall or ceiling as specified. The two are assembled in the field and attached with screws.

SUS (Suspended) mounting: Exposed or concealed screw eyes are inserted into a heavy backer. Cables or chains are then attached to the screw eyes, and to the ceiling or other surface. Please note close proximity to HVAC ducts or exterior windows and doors, as extra measures must be taken to prevent the sign from moving.

As depicted in the illustrations, the shape and size of the backer is often different for different mounting methods. Please be specific about how you would like your sign mounted before ordering. If you aren't sure what type of mounting is proper for the location, please don't hesitate to contact us. As a manufacturer of interior and exterior signage, we are in touch with the finer points of installation in a way Architects and Construction Managers may not be.

Most instances of changing the mounting method (particularly in Ceiling and Flag mounted signs) result in throwing away an otherwise perfectly good sign and building a brand new one based on new specifications.

Layout Guidelines

Here are some simple guidelines we recommend for all interior signage:

1) Select uniform copy locations and justifications whenever possible. The nine layouts shown below are samples of each combination of horizontal and vertical justification.

Layout Guidelines (Top Justifications)

2) Text sizes should be large enough to be legible, and still be esthetically pleasing. A ½" high letter is readable from about 25 ft. by those with good vision.

3) Keep your interline spacing (the distance from the baselines of consecutive lines of text) uniform, usually about 150% the letter height.

Layout Guidelines (Middle Justifications)

4) Maintain margins roughly equal to the height of the capital letters you are using.

5) Selecting an appropriate sign size is also critical. Keep in mind that different words and phrases have different widths and numbers of required lines. If small signs are required, consider abbreviations and elimination of extra words as options.

Layout Guidelines (Bottom Justifications)

6) We also very strongly recommend using one typestyle or styles from the same "family" throughout a facility (see the examples below). The more specific your information, the closer your design will match the product.

7) Remember, Diskey's designers will be happy to assist or advise in any way. The least significant detail now may later become much more prominent.

Illustrated above are about half of the the Helvetica / Arial typestyle family. As you can see by the diversity in just those shown here, lack of specification can result in something that not only wasn't in the original plan, but isn't even ADA compliant!
